Social Security in the states is providing the Spousal Benefits to the eligible residents.
So, Social Security Payment will be decided according to your age, work history and marital status.
In US, It is a very good news for the residents that they are eligible to get up to 50% benefits of their Spouse's.
Spouses can only apply if they have been married for one year at least.
Divorcee can apply for Social Security even after two years of divorced but their marriage should be lasted for 10 plus years.
You may be eligible for a personal benefit if you have a work history. If your personal benefit is more than your spousal benefit then you are eligible for higher amount.
If you starts payment at full retirement age or older usually 66 or 67 or more than that then your spousal benefits will be 50% of your spouse's benefits.
Without any reduction you may be eligible to receive spousal benefits when your spouse receives Social Security benefits and you have a qualifying child who is under age 16 or disabled and receives Social Security child benefits.
If you marry someone else after getting a divorce, you will not be eligible to receive spousal benefits through your ex-spouse. You will instead be eligible for spousal benefits based on your new spouse's work record.
The survivor may choose to forego their own benefit and continue with the benefits of the deceased spouse if their benefit was higher.
If you remarry before 60 then it declined your eligibility to collect on your deceased spouse's or ex-spouse's record.
